Manitoba

Literacy practitioners from Manitoba got the chance to reflect on their stories in late June of 2007. Workplace Education Manitoba Steering Committee invited Tannis Atkinson to lead a personal development workshop called “My Story, Your Story, Our Stories”. Participants explored their relationship to literacy work in a series of writing exercises and art activities. Each person created a woven accordion book collage.

One thing I learned today was

  • some tools to transfer creative thought to the classroom
  • use art for teaching activities to set aside my hesitation and just enjoy creating how nice it is to address the ‘soul’ in literacy
  • linearity is only one route
  • that there are numerous ways to teach literacy – not all literacy is words and symbols. It is also ideas.
  • to stop and reflect more deliberately in my practice…where have I been, where am I now, where am I going…
When I get back to work I will…
  • remember to take time for art
  • definitely use this with Stage 3 literacy students as precursor to ‘change’ stories
  • feel somewhat refreshed
  • try to spend more time writing; it’s been missing from my life and is a great means to get thoughts out and resolve problems
  • get literacy providers together to develop a provincial strategy to promote literacy in the business world
  • take time to: deliberately balance more to get what I need in my practice; research and read more about current practice; write more and dialogue more
tout la gang!
