In
June of 2007, editor Tannis
Atkinson travelled to Belfast
for the annual conference
of RaPAL (Research and
Practice in Adult Literacy).
She and Festival of Literacies
coordinator Sheila Stewart
facilitated a workshop
which invited practitioners
to reflect on their journeys
into literacy work and
what they have learned
and experienced. Tannis
and Sheila guided people
through several arts-based
activities. By the end
of the sessions, each person
had produced a woven accordion
book that conveyed, visually
and verbally, both the
visible and hidden parts
of their stories.
Here is what some participants said about the workshop:
“I seldom stop to think of my identity – it was revealing.”
“Fun. Creative. Full of potential.”
“Found creative writing challenging – sense of panic, but thoughts
began to flow when I relaxed.”
“This was great. A chance to reflect and think on paper – a chance
to share.”
“Made me start to think about how I work what I am.” |
