We
welcome writing in various genres, including questions,
reflections, letters, e-mail conversations, short articles,
stories and poetry. We also welcome longer, more formal
articles.
Each
issue of the journal will include the following sections:
focus
on... (articles up to 3000 words)
This
section is theme-based. The theme is also the topic
for the web forum.
This
section can include:
- formal or informal studies,
interviews, accounts of personal experience, reflections,
fiction, art, etc., by practitioners, academic or
professional researchers that connect with theory,
research and/or practice and the theme for that issue
(to see upcoming themes, check our editorial schedule
on the overview page)
- articles that express
positions and arguments on the theme

The
articles and interviews in this section are published
online at the same time as the release of the print
journal.
practice:
reports, reflections, analysis (up to 3000 words)
This
section is not theme-based.
This
section can include:

by practitioners, academic or professional researchers
that connect with theory, research and/or practice
- articles that express
positions and arguments on current issues in
teaching practice, program organization and public
policy
- responses to or critiques
of research or analysis that we publish
- accounts of personal
experience, reflections, exchanges of letters
or edited conversations between people involved
in literacy practice and research
We

reviews (750-1500 words)
The
articles are formal or informal reviews or reflections
on materials, books, films, research reports and studies,
etc. that engage with theory and research about or relevant
to adult literacy research and practice.

articles in these sections are published online six
months after the release of the print journal.
connections (750-1500 words)
This
section is for updates about research and practice events
and reports.
The
articles in this section are published online six months
after the release of the print journal if the contents
are not time sensitive.
reprints
Ordinarily,
we will not publish articles that have been published
in other journals. The only exception would be international
articles that our readers might not otherwise have access
to or be able to read.
